ULTRA GIANT MONSTER ENCYCLOPEDIA SERIES

Nippon Columbia has at last reissued this extensive video series, first released in 1983. It's positively a gigantic smorgasbord for monster fans, especially those who want their action unencumbered by insignificant things like plot. Given that there are no English subtitles, these DVDs still offer a great glimpse into the various Ultra worlds. Taken from the original VHS sources, these discs don't represent the high quality of the newly remastered DVD sets, but who can complain with 50 minutes of non-stop conflict. Album versions of the main themes are used to wrap up each volume, matched up to previously unseen footage.

Blue Sonnet

The creator of "Gunsmith Cats" fathered this 5 episode OVA series about Cyborg Sonnet, who has been trained to be the ultimate warrior. She is sent to Japan to watch Komatsuzaki Lan, who is thought to be controlled by the Crimson Fang. While Lan is in danger of loosing her soul, Sonnet starts to rediscover her humanity. Guin Saga

This set of image albums were inspired by Kaoru Kurimoto's epic series. Goro Ohmi provides the electronic score, written in much the same way Joel McNeely created the soundtrack for the "Star Wars" novel "Shadows of the Empire." Kurimoto started the "Guin Saga" with plans for it to be 100 volumes long, and she's still at it! The tale opens with the twin brother and sister Rinda and Remus, sole survivors of a royal family, who are completely unprepared for their journey across dangerous enemy territory. When they fall into enemy hands, a warrior in a leopard mask rescues them. He is a mystery, even to himself, remembering nothing but his name, Guin.
