For over thirty years, humans have been waging a war against JAM, a mysterious invading force that suddenly reached earth through an enormous column of mist that has materialized in the Antarctica, super-dimensionally connecting Earth and planet Fairy. After successfully stalling the advances of the invading forces, humans have pushed back and the battles are now taking place on Planet Fairy. Air bases have been built there, where thousands of personnels inhabit to continue the war. Despite the advances, and the continued presence of Fairy Air Force in the planet, the end of war is nowhere in sight after decades of battles, and detailed information, true identity, and even the origin of JAM continue to be elusive.

Special Air Force has been formed to carry out reconnaissance missions to monitor the war and to gather as much information about JAM as possible. Equipped with Super Sylph FFR-31MR, an advanced tactical reconnaissance plane with superb capabilities and enormous artificial intelligence, SAF is commonly referred to as Boomerang, for it is demanded of each pilot to make absolutely certain to return to the base with gathered information, no matter what the cost may be, even when faced with plight of friendly forces.

Based on the signature work by Japan's popular science fiction author, Chouhei Kanbayashi, the anime show follows Lt. Fukai who pilots "Yukikaze," an upgraded version of Super Sylph. Total of five volumes planned to be released.

With generous cooperation of Air Base Komatsu, the production crew closely watched and studied actual fighter jets and wide variety of equipments to add as much reality to the show as possible. Director Masahiko Ookura, along with CG animation creators and others, have gone so far as to hop on F-15 to experience the take off. Rather than synthesizing it, sounds of the jet were recorded around the air base. Executive producer Umanosuke Iida previously directed Gundam 0080.
The series organizer Hiroshi Yamaguchi is known for writing scripts for Aregento Soma. Masahiro Aizawa(Shojo Kakumei UTENA) and Koichi Hashimoto(Armitage III Poly-Matrix) directed character animation designs while Ikuto Yamashita(Blue Submarine No.6) and Seiji Kio(Evangelion) did mechanical designs.
